Review

Advance praise for Take This Bread“A love song to the feast at the altar and the feast of a food pantry written with grit, authority and integrity.”–Nora Gallagher, author of Changing Light“Sara Miles’s joy, confusion, and passion for the Christian life, together with her skill as a professional journalist and the fullness of her own humanity, have produced what has to be the finest confession of faith I’ve read in years. Take This Bread is a good, tight, absorbing read.”–Phyllis Tickle, author of The Divine Hours and former Religion Editor for Publishers Weekly“This book is a stunner. Beautifully and simply written, it is a wonderfully straightforward account of a life and a conversion which will leave many readers, as it left me, tingling with longing that such signs and wonders might emerge in and through our own stories. Sara has come by the great truths of the Christian faith honestly. The story of how people grow through becoming empowered to be givers, and not mere receivers of handouts is a wonderful glimpse at a true emergence of Church.”–James Alison, Catholic theologian, priest, and author of Faith Beyond Resentment“Some books you can’t put down, some you shouldn’t–this one’s both. Sara Miles’s story of spiritual nourishment recalls Patch Adams, but she’s also a writer like John Muir or Jane Addams, a gifted stylist whose passion translates to vivid storytelling. Take This Bread is necessary reading, I would think, for anyone who’s ever taken a bite out of anything.”–J. C. Hallman, author of The Devil is a GentlemanFrom the Hardcover edition.

Caveat: I am only on page 79 -- and I promise to revisit this review if my opinion changes as I read -- but I am struggling with this book. This seems less to me a story about finding faith, than one about finding My Extraordinary Church. Miles' conversion took place 20 pages ago, but she doesn't really describe what spiritual change she has had, instead she has spent 20 pages discussing how great her church is: the home-baked bread (not "dead white disks of wafers" but ""dense whole wheat bread" or "sublime brioche"); the architecture, the art, the music, the demographics of the congregants, the structure of the service. I wouldn't be bothered by all this -- except that intrinsic to her whole discussion is that her church is BETTER than other churches. Her church is "lively and not archaic, yet utterly without the cheesiness of 'contemporary' Christianity" -- but what makes a cappella Shaker hymns and Tibetan bells less "cheesy" than soft rock? Or murals of Ella Fitzgerald and Queen Elizabeth I NOT cheesy? It's great Miles has found a church she likes, but this is so far a story about her sense of BELONGING, about finding a church that fits, not about FAITH. And that's the second disappointing thing. To me, church-shopping is an individual pursuit, and a small topic. I am always more interested in (and mystified by) how people find faith; what brings a person to belief?I don't think it matters whether your communion is a wafer or home-baked bread; I suspect both can serve the same purpose when shared in the right spirit.Nowhere near as good as Mary Karr's Lit.

The more books I read and the older I get, the less need for me to trudge through to completion. I got as far as chapter 8 before calling it quits. I just can't relate to the author. I'm a 67 year old retired engineer/educator who has tried to follow a christian philosophy without being, per se, religious. I just couldn't get through the massive excruciating details of trivia with very little discussion on the main theme; conversion to a religion. There are too many good books out there which I haven't read for me to spend any more time on this one.

Overall, I love the story of this book. But I found it could have been told in much less than nearly 300 pages. I kept waiting for her spiritual conversion, which she did undergo, yet didn't go in depth about how it actually changed her. You could read the back of the book and know everything that was the take away from this book. It took me a week to read it, and I usually go through a book every 3 days. I love the overall story though. It was just a bit hard to take in.

I am an Episcopalian, by birth and for nearly my entire 70 years on this planet. I love our church - for it's openness, for it's inclusiveness, for it's use of the 3-legged stool of scripture, tradition and reason, and for the beautiful liturgy that has been around in some form for hundreds of years. I think it a miracle (not literally..more a happy coincidence) that Sara happened upon St. Gregory's church in San Francisco. It is obviously a place she felt welcomed, and eventually able to start her ministry. Not all Episcopal churches, or perhaps any other church, would have been a good fit for her, and I took issue with her judgment of those who formed committees, discussed, and didn't act. Yes, that happens, but there are many, many churches who do significant outreach just not in the form that she believes is most effective. That said, her writing is amazing, her choice of words spoke to me, and this book literally changed the way I experience the Eucharist. I recommend it highly and especially for a book discussion.

I loved this book! I've been reading this book over the last month ------- and it's the ONLY book I've been reading, whenever I got a chance. Generally, at night, just before turning off my lamp, I'd read a couple pages or a chapter. I finished last night. And I'm so sorry that it's finished.Sara, this book blew me away! How I wish the churches in Trinidad would read this! I think we're too busy looking to keep "our" seats in the pews and doing what looks right to everybody else............but completely missing what Jesus asks us to do. Thank you for writing this book. Thank you for putting it into words, what I've been trying to explain to people for a while.A visit to St. Gregory's is now on my list of things I absolutely MUST do. And I'd love to be part of a service & to help as a volunteer at least one day --- if I ever get to the US.Thank you. Blessings, Sara - you're feeding the multitudes.
