Amazon.com Review
Endorsed by Sun Microsystems, Core Java 1.1 deals with "fundamental" Java programming. The first volume deals with "fundamental" Java programming. Geared toward the more experienced programmer who has a knowledge of some other programming language, this guide is full of tips and smart enhancements to help you get the most out of basic Java.Early chapters provide the history of Java and the basics of using it for Internet computing. The authors dutifully cover the bare-bones essentials of Java, such as variables, programming statements, and the basic object design in Java and argue that it is a good (though not perfect) object-oriented programming language. They include helpful suggestions for modeling classes using inheritance and interfaces. Some expert material, which makes use of several advanced language features, is also included in the discussion of how to clone arrays. Later the authors show how to use Java's inner classes, including anonymous inner classes. The chapter on graphics programming is also geared toward real-world programmers, showing how printing can be integrated alongside code that displays graphics on the screen. The rest of the book moves toward the fundamentals of Abstract Window Toolkit (AWT) programming, first covering the complexities of event handling in the Java Developer's Kit (JDK) 1.1 event model, then publishing a survey of the basic AWT components. The discussion of the "peer," or native, model and how it can be bypassed easily using "lightweight" controls in JDK 1.1 programming is interesting. Concluding chapters describe the basics of processing applets; data structures, such as vectors and hash tables (as well as custom linked lists and queues for the more ambitious programmer); and exception handling. The organization of this text makes a lot of sense for new--and more experienced--programmers who are making the transition to Java. This book covers a lot of ground while delivering a good deal of "expert mode" programming knowledge along the way. Even those who already know a little Java will benefit from this information.

The Core Java series was fantastic to pick up Java quickly. I don't know how well this book would do for a new programmer but having already been a C++/C programmer, this books allowed me to quickly get into Java. It didn't waste time with programming methods that are already known to an experianced programmer, just jumped right into the things that make Java what it is.
To get the most out of this book, you need only one thing: Previous knowledge from an object-oriented language. Comparisons with C++ and Visual Basic are made throughout the book, so experience in these languages is helpful. The authors give you a full course in the Java-language and the basics of AWT and graphics programming. They are not afraid of telling their opinion, and the book is a great way of getting lots of good advice on style, approach and strategy. However, basic knowledge of data structures and patterns is required and the average to expert programmer don't have to skip many pages. (And then they actually tell you what pages to skip:-) What no of the other reviewers have said so far is that you could as well order volume II immediately. Volume I is so good you really feel the need for threads, streaming, networking et c. My advice on how to be a Java-expert: go for the two of them now!
I am still reading this book, The only word that I can describe about this book is EXCELLENT, almost PERFECT. no toy example. very in-depth explanations about the java. Actually I really like the comment part with c++. I got experience about c++. The comment with c++ even make me think about something about c++. I got bunch of java books, All these books either are full of toy examples for dummies, or you can't understand what they are talking about. Cay & Gary really know java and c++. they touched the very deep down of java and c++. you get this book, you don't need others. and you save money. Sure, I am so eager to get the volume II. I am really interested in the JDBC and Java Bean part.
This book is excellent for experienced programmers wishing to learn one of the booming languages of today. I read alot of books and this one is the perfect companion and one of the best computer books on my shelf. One note i like is the notes for C/C++ and Visual Basic programmers. This book is well worth its weight in gold.
Core Java 1.1 is the best book on Java that I have read. The explanations have enough detail that the implications are clear. The authors are especially good at identifying both strong and weak points of Java. This is a book for hands-on Java programming and doesnot simply regurgitate Java syntax.
I found this book to be a good read. The material contained within was well laid out, and well explained, and I would recommend this book to programmers who have had some programming experience before, but it seems rather complex for the beginner. On the down side however, the reference material is almost non-existant, and the index is all but worthless, so if you are looking for a book that is a reference volume, this is definately not it. So in terms of a shelf life, this books is really only good for the read.
The core java books are getting better and better each time. If you are looking to learn java or just would like to keep a book on your desk. This is the winner. Click on the link and buy it today !
