Estas tradicionales sesiones de Ho'oponopono incluían un proceso que seguía un orden sensato: oración, discusión, confesión, arrepentimiento, restitución mutua y perdón.
En la década de 1980, Morrnah Simeona, reconocida en 1983 como una kahuna au lapa (curandera) y honrada como un “Tesoro Viviente de Hawai”, desarrolló lo que llamó una versión actualizada y simplificada de Ho’oponopono que podía ser practicada por el individuo solo.
