This third, stout volume recounts the dramatic climax of the quest for the Blood Diary, which holds the secret magic of the evil Black Heart. Three groups of do-gooding warriors are trying to track down the diary: Elena, the wit'ch, and her one-armed companion, Er'ril; Elena's Aunt Mycelle (a reformed shape-changer) and her motley crew; and the pirate Kast the Bloodrider and his beloved Sy-wen. Clemens tediously details each group's long journey, which concludes in a final confrontation on the island of A'loa Glen. There, the adventurers must confront the evil mage Shorkan (who happens to be Er'ril's brother). No tyro, Clemens does intelligent things with Elena and her brother, Joach, as they fight not only their enemies but also the dangers of their magical powers. He writes suggestively about shape-changing, and the final battle is so well constructed that it demands to be read at one sitting. But Clemens's decision to reveal only toward the end that the Blood Diary does not in fact hold the real key to the power of the Black Heart (thereby invalidating the purpose of the quest) produces terrific disappointment. (It does, however, suggest that he'll write at least one more novel in this series.) Although the scenario revolves around strong women and an abundantly detailed world, such a plot is hardly a novelty in contemporary fantasy fiction. Weakly executed, this book won't compel the attention of more discriminating readers.

Ho-hum, though fresh in the detail and lively in the telling. (Or hear it, perhaps: the rhythms make this an excellent read-aloud choice.) The facial expressions Firth ( We Love Them ; The Park in the Dark ) gives to each animal are highly entertaining; the staring bear is especially endearing. Ages 4-7.

About the Author
Piers Myers is Senior Lecturer in Human Resource Management Strategy and Consulting at London South Bank University. His research, writing and teaching interests centre on business psychology, leadership, HR strategy and organizational change. Before joining the university in 2001, Piers ran his own consultancy business, and he continues to undertake selected projects as a change consultant and coach. He has also worked as a psychotherapist, in the computing industry and in social work. Piers has a first degree in Mathematics from Oxford University, and Masters degrees in Mathematics from Princeton University and in Psychotherapy and Counselling from City University. Sally Hulks works as Director of Change for a UK government department. She is a Research Fellow of Ashridge Business School where she worked previously as a change consultant. Prior to joining Ashridge Sally was HR Director for KPMG, having spent her early career at the BBC and in retail management. Sally has a first degree in French, Masters degrees in Organizational Behaviour (Birkbeck College) and Organizational Consulting (Ashridge) and is a Fellow of the Institute of Personnel Development. She is an accredited executive coach and holds British Psychological certificates of competence, Levels A and B, in psychometric testing. Liz Wiggins works as a change consultant and executive coach for Ashridge Business School, supporting organizations, leaders and change agents in the public, private and voluntary sectors. She is also a member of faculty on two Masters programmes run at Ashridge. Before joining Ashridge, Liz worked for Unilever with responsibility globally for internal communication and was a member of the global HR Leadership team. Liz has also worked in the telecommunications sector and for a medium sized change and communication consultancy. Liz has a first degree in psychology and philosophy (Durham), Masters degrees in Organizational Psychology (Birkbeck) and Executive Coaching (Ashridge). She also has a PhD from Birkbeck College, University of London where her research interest was in management consultants.

I've been using the last edition for a decade in my federal litigation practice. I bought the new edition recently because of major changes in the law from when I started out. This is a must hsve

I have used Chemerinsky's Constitutional law books for both Constitutional classes in law school and I always find them helpful in understanding the rule. I used this student treatise to help with the recommended reading for the class and it helps you to understand the history behind the rules created, lays out the holding of the Court and goes in dept with the subjects covered. The only thing I would recommend is that you purchase a hard cover instead of the Kindle version because it's easier to highlight the rules and it would be quicker when trying to put together an outline.

A very necessary supplement for surviving Fed Courts.
